Newborns will still sneeze a little for a while. If you hear a cough, that's indicative of an illness. If you see any mucus in the nose, use the suction bulb to get it out. Then (and this is gross), squeeze the mucus out onto a tissue and see what color it is. Green means infection, so go see the doctor. Yellow means call the doctor's office and ask about it. White is usually no big deal. Your newborn, you will notice, does not have any nosehairs like you do. There's going to be stuff up the nose. Just remember, only suction when you can SEE stuff in the nose. Otherwise, you could cause some of the blood vessels to break.

This can be so hard, because babies often have cold-like symptoms due to inability to clear their own airways. They often seem congested.
Look for discoloration of the mucus. If it's clear, it's probably just normal drainage, but if it becomes greenish, it's likely infected. Also, a persistant cough is a solid indicator.
Try using a nasal aspirator (bulb syringe) and some saline drops in the nose. This will help clear baby up.

Sometimes it is very hard... I have three year old twin boys and it seemed like always one was sick. Usual signs are runny nose and crankiness possibly even a fever. Just need to call the pediatrician - they have on call nurses for new parents... call them since that is what they are there for. They will answer any question you may have. But it is tough to decipher between a cold and teething (and the doctors always say teething doesn't cause colds... bogus!).

If baby has a runny nose and is congested. You can also put your ear to baby's chest, you will hear a rattle. Get the baby to a doctor immediately-colds can lead to RSV (which is what happened to my daughter). Colds in newborns can be a problem.

Same as you runny nose, fever, etc.
Now how to tell the difference between a cold and teething HAHAHAHA!
And don't worry you do not need to rush your baby off to the doctor for every little sniffle. Just keep an eye on them and make sure they are acting normal (not groggy, not screaming) and that they are making enough wet diapers.

same way you tell if you have a cold. Running nose and eyes, crankiness that sort of thing. If its a severe cold there might even be a fever, or loss of appitite. But generally thats a full on fluish virus and not just a cold.

Same as everyone else said, but most doctors want to see any baby under 3 months old if he/she has a cold. I was always paranoid, so i would take the baby to the pediatrician just to be sure!!

If the baby is cranky when you try to feed, if they have a stuffy nose and you shove a bottle or breast in their mouths they can't breathe so they get "cranky" and keep pushing the "food" away. You can hear them breathing, almost snoring during sleep.
