And should the first draft pool consist of those who supported the war in 2002 and/or their children - provided they are able to serve but have so far refused to do so?

I would especially like to hear from people who support the war and are able to serve but have not.

He is absolutely right. If there was a draft we would never have been in Iraq. There is not a politico in Washington that would have sent their son(s) into that mess. Not to mention Bush would have had second thoughts to sending his precious twins over.

As an example: How many politicians sons are in Iraq now? The answer is very few. And every one is in a noncombat position. Nice and safe from the real mess over there.

A mandatory draft is the only way to prevent this sort of mess. It makes politicians think about things before putting their own kids in harms way.

I do believe we would still be in Afghanistan though, because we were viciously attacked before hand. That war is justified even in the eyes of Muslims, as a defensive war. Iraq is a Crime Against Humanity, it is and will be known as a aggressive war (unattacked or unprovoked.)

Charlie Rangel is an attention-wh*re. That is all this is.

It hasn't even been three weeks and the Democrats are already about to shoot themselves in the foot. If not the stupid draft thing to get attention, it'll be the economically-stupid 40% increase in minimum wage.

And what's wrong with an all-volunteer force, by the way? Some people grow up in seemingly dead ends, and for them the military provides tremendous opportunities (training, education). Even if such a draft were to be passed, you'd now be taking away those very opportunities for a lot of people, since there'd be no way to volunteer anymore ...

Rangel is an idiot. The military is made up of 80% conservatives, so they are putting their money where their mouth is. I've served my country, my two sisters have served, my niece is now serving. I support the war, I have an IQ of 139, and I think the draft should be the absolute last resort and only used in National Emergencies. Good enough?

You first need to understand how a draft works, then come back and ask a question.
I am not able to serve but my ex husband went and my son who is only 14 wants to start training now. Volunteer Army is best.
Not all people have the stuff it takes to be a soldier.

Good question!
I agree with Rangel; if conscription were mandatory, then many of the elected officials (w/draft-eligible children) wouldn't be so quick to go into war!
AND...yes, the 'FIRST' draft-pool should consist of ALL of the draft-eligible children of ALL elected officials in the United States!
Only then would our politicians be less enthusiastic about supporting a dumb-@ss president and his hairbrained reasons for rushing into an unfounded war!

I support the war but I don't support the draft. I don't want people who don't want to be there fighting covering the backs of our troops who are currently putting their lives on the line.

Besides, I have no doubt in my mind, all Americans will step up to the plate when the time comes!

If you are going to ask the question this way, you are not going to get a straight answer.

Rangel is simply undermining support for the war. Pure politicking. Is that ethical?

I agree with a 2 year service requirement. Not necessarily in the military, but everyone should spend some time in service to our country when they finish high school.

While I'm quite sure Rangel is only making this suggestion to highlight his point, he is absolutely right; while we do have an 'all-volunteer' force at present, we are short troops, and the logical thing to do is to reintroduce a draft.

Last time I checked, Democrats claimed we hadn't done enough to catch Osama bin Laden so...maybe we should draft you and your family for the war in Afghanistan/Pakistan.
