EMTs are Emergency Medical Technicians. They provide emergency care to sick and injured people in a pre-hospital environment. They work for private ambulance services, as county employees, on fire departments, and in hospitals. Youcan work on a voluntary basis or as a paid professional. It all depends on you and what you choose.

When it comes to the education aspect of it, it varies. There are levels of EMT classification. Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic. Basic class usually take around 6-9 months. Intermediate is about the same, however you will be building on skills you already have at the Basic level. Paramedic class takes between 1-2 years. 2 years if you want an Associates Degree.

As an EMT you will be certified at the state level which will be handled through the school where you take the class. Then you need to be nationally registered. This is the big test. You pay out of pocket for this one and it is non-refundable (100 bucks I think). Its tough but if you made it through the classes without alot of trouble then you'll be fine. If you don't pass the first time you can take it up to 3 times in a year I believe. check out the website www.NREMT.org.

I have been an EMT for 3 years and it is very rewarding. I hope you choose to go for it. Its hard work but worth ALL the effort. Good luck!

an EMT is a lot like a taxi driver. Think of them as an emergency medical taxi......it only takes a couple months to earn EMT-B (basic). At that point you are pretty limited, though. You can give only extremely basic care (like first aid) and drive the ambulance. You have to do more schooling and tests to reach the next levels (EMT Intermediate and EMT Advanced).

Paramedics do the more advanced medical care on the scene of an accident or in the back of the ambulance while the EMT drives. Paramedic school will take about an additional 1 year, but it really depends on the school.

No, it actually does not make a difference on med school applications. Many people think it will, but I have talked to med school admission directors and things like EMT and paramedic don't look particularly good and will not help you. You just need to focus on getting really good grades and a really high MCAT score. Research experience and extracurricular activities also look really good.

Good Luck

Emergency Medical Technician. Rides in the ambulances and helps the people who need emergency medical attention. Lots like a paramedic. Basically that's what it is.
