If you knew someone from your family was stealing money...a lot of money, what would you do? We don't want to put out the money for a camera, but how do we catch them? She cleans our house.... and would it be possible for the police get involved?

The money is in a hidden space in my brothers room.... she somehow found it. and recently, she stole from my mom's purse.
If we called the cops, we have no evidence.... would that work?
And duh, of course fire her and stuff, we aren't stupid....we just want to get this worked out.

Since this is a family member, you have to work things out. Confront them privately and tell them to stop it. Threaten to tell the whole family if they do not repay what they took-not just from you but your entire family.
Do not fall for sob stories. The time for sob stories was before she took the money.
What did she need the money for? Gambling, drugs, etc? Then demand that she gets counciling. If it was for a valid reason, then you need to be firm but fair. This is not how people behave; especially towards family.
Avoid getting the police involved if possible. This will only lead to being on Dr. Phil. Change the locks and explain she is no longer welcome in your house.

If you are not sure that she took the money, talk to her and ask her whether she took it. She may confess and give the money back, in which case the problem is solved. Also, stop leaving money around.
If you are sure she took the money, take these following steps:
1. Stop leaving money around.
2. Tell her that you know she's been taking money and ask for it back.
3. Call the police if she doesn't give it back.
I would also be very concerned about what's causing her to steal. For example, does she have some secret drug, gambling, or pornography problem that she is trying to fund? You might want to get to the bottom of this so you can really help her.

I think about all you can do is install a camera. When my dad died.....it was a couple hours before a cousin even called the police and a couple hours more before I was called. After I got there a day later, I was immediately sent out to do all the formalities. In that time...she successfully heisted a great deal of stuff. Alot of money.....alot of jewlery. It wasn't the monitary part that bothered me it was these were things I KNEW were there and knew my dad kept for me. All the police wanted was proof. I had none. Even with matching stories from other relatives and neighbors it wasn't enough for them to do anything. So I had to settle with Divine justice and the great here-after. I was taxed on it. I had to pay for what she stole. I couldn't PROVE anything to get reimbursed even with insurance. Sucks. You have to have something to base your doubt and accusation on. Camera sounds the least expensive of the lot. Real life isn't TV.

If you know for a fact the person was stealing then confront them. Also don't leave them alone in the house or a room by themselves where there are things you don't want to lose. Maybe you shouldn't have them clean your house anymore. If it's so bad that you feel you need to have the police involved it would seem better just to have the person not be allowed in your home. Just make sure you know for a fact they are the one who is stealing first.

Why don't you not make the money so accessible? You can also fire her and clean your own house. Then down the road hire a professional.

If you tell the police they can set up a camera no charge for you I say that's the way to go.

I wouldn't have someone I don't trust cleaning my house.
I wouldn't recommend police involvement if you can avoid it.

I would have her arrested. Blood means nothing to me if it doesn't mean anything to the thief.
