The common name for this species is Gray Myotis or Howell's Bat .

However, the translation of its Latin name would be "gray mouse-eared" , from a combination of Greek and Latin roots: "mys" = mouse + "otis" =ear/eared + "grisescens", from "griseus" = gray.
