You dont need to change it. You might be having a configurational problem at the moment. You should always be sure that the modem, is powered on, then the router, and then any printers (connected to the router), and then any computers. If the modem is not on when the router is powered on, it would be able to obtain necessary connection information, like IP addresses, and DNS server addresses and such. To resolve your problem, try shutting off EVERYTHING. Then power the modem on. Make sure you know it's fully powered on (past bootup, and self-check, if it has it), and then turn on the router. Once that is up, turn on the comp. If this doesn't work, contact your cable company, and then an run internal checks on whether "their" modem is working.

The modem should be set to assign an IP to your router automatically.
Your router should be set to get an IP automatically.
If both of those are correct and it isn't working, call your cable company.

It's easiest if you call your cable provider and have them to help you bridge your modem to your router.
