It could be an upper respiratory infection. Is he wheezing at all? any discharge from the eyes or nose? Upper respiratory infections are usually caused by too much dust in a cage. what kind of bedding are you using? Stay away from wood chips, especially pine and cedar. Aspen is ok though. I suggest recycled paper bedding such as carefresh. do try to clean the eye though, if possible, as it could just be something in his eye. If it is an upper respiratory infection, he will need antibiotics prescribed by a vet

Hamsters are nocturnal. They should be awake at night and sleep during the day. My hamster also has eye trouble at times. Make sure it has plenty of water and give it some time. Hamsters don't live that long, about 2-3 years. We have been on "death watch" for a week now. Our hamster isn't moving a lot. Just check to make sure the hamster is still breathing. It's little body should be moving up and down.

Well if it is a baby it will keep it's eyes closed. It might be try to start opening them.

maybe its got pink eye?!?! Try using a warm wet cloth to clean it off and open up his eye gently with your hand to see if there is even an eye there!
