Thank you for the answers everyone. I am a white girl born and raised in America. I bought a GRE study book and just cannot get those vocab words down. It was the same way on the SAT's I scored at the 30th percentile but I am really smart. My QPA was a 3.88 in college and I have a MS in exercise physiology and want to get my PhD in epi. or ex. phys. However, I don't want to spend money on the application fee if the score is too low and I need to retake the exam. I get to go to school at U. Pitt for cheap because I work there which is why that is the university of choice in my question. Again, thanks for the answers and this is just some additional info. Yes it is still out of 1600 each section 800 but I thought 600 out of 800 was pretty damn good. Is it not? Thanks

Admissions committees will (understandably) wonder about the low verbal score. However, your writing score will help you tremendously.

I don't know what department you're applying to, but my guess is that it is in the social sciences or humanities, so here's my best advice:

Make sure your writing sample and personal statement:
-- are IMPECCABLY written
-- demonstrate your strong preparation within your intended field of study
-- clearly demonstrate your methodological sophistication
-- articulate why that particular program is such a good "fit" for you

Finally, if possible, ask your recommenders if they are willing to address, in their letters, your abilities in written and spoken communication. If they agree, this should assure the admissions committee that your verbal score should not eliminate you from consideration.

Best wishes!

That is an extremeley low verbal score -- and something sounds fishy given that you have decent writing skills. It would seem to indicate that you have no problem expressing yourself but have trouble comprehending.

All graduate programs take lots of things into consideration. Unfortunately, you tell us nothing else other than your GRE scores. You don't mention your major, your grades or anything else about your experience.

If you have a very high GPA from a decent school with good recommendations and aer going into a more quantitative field -- then you have a shot at Pitt -- but probably not at a better university. If you are in a field in the liberal arts and have less than a 3.4 -- I don't think Pitt will take you.

Either way, you should address your low verbal score and high writing score in your cover letter.

It depends on the specific program, but it may be hard with such a low verbal score. It's a stupid exam, but some programs take it seriously. Can you train for it harder? It's about learning vocabulary for the most part.

If English is not your Native language that you will want to mention that as an explanation. From the 5.5/6 score and your application essay they will see that you can write, but that you are just not used to the system and that may be what led to the low verbal score.

That said, your math score is not very high either (or is the max no longer 800?) so that may be just as big a concern.

Hmm...I am not sure how good of a school U. of Pittsburgh is, but a GRE score of 1100 isn't really seen as great for most universities, so a score of 950 will probably hinder your chances.

Hopefully your GPA is outstanding...?

it particularly relies upon on the faculty you're making plans to attend. I took the GRE 2 years in the past, & i could say, it substitute into complicated. My college in basic terms required an 800 to get into grad college & I handed on the 1st try. you could order GRE learn supplies on line that can assist you you learn (that's what i did). the mathematics substitute into quite complicated. generally applications. The writing area wasn't graded at my college, yet dealt with present day subjects. so as long as you reside present day interior the information & write properly, you would be effective. the different area (can not bear in ideas what they known because it) substitute into uncomplicated english & grammar. the main perfect difficulty is to not stress out!!!! solid success!
