In the old times it was by fighting and killing the invaders. Now if any nation wants to get liberty and there is resistance, they have to try to move the world's opinion and make it clear of the situation that exists in the subdued country. By pacific ways is the only alternative today, which is better but almost impossible to obtain results as long as there is no real purpose to make a decision. The wise manipulation of the public opinion that is possible today makes this proposition almost impossible
The invader will pretend to hear the affected nation but nothing will be done. The United Nations is not functional. It is organized in such a way that the power lies on a small group of large nations which protect their interests among them. The power of the weaker nations is nil. They may only get honorary positions there. As long as there is an economic or strategic interest on the other nation they will stay there and get the lion's share. They will try by all means to change the opinion in the subdued nation by several ways including bringing in their people to displace the natives and making them feel inferior. In Alaska the proportion of non native able voters was overwhelming over the natives. It does not matter whether the subdued country is friendly or not. George Washington is a hero now but if the war against England would have been lost he would have been classified in a very offensive way.by the English and the local conservatives. He may have even suffered serious sanctions.

Well, only 1/3 the population wanted independence from British Rule it was the shipping industry in New England felt it make better profits without the British taking their cuts. Benedict Arnold's on both sides made mad money off the war of independence. America was not really a free in modern terms till the 1960s civil rights movements. The early Presidents like Jackson were tyrants and fire cabinet people who opposed him, and try to take people out who opposed him they can get away with it by any means. The early days of the American republic only Land owners could vote, and the house of representative's was elected by state legislators which meants thuggery and bribery to get in the game. What was considered freedom in 1840s would be today in Western Standards a country with the amount of political freedom like modern day Latin American country. Freedom of Speech today is more lenient than in Wilson's day where people opposed to the war in Europe in 1914 were sent to prison with the Alien Sedition acts, and censorship was used thought the 20th century to shield the people from the truth of war. Be glad to in 2006 and not 1824 or 1914.

I assume you mean a protectorate or a colony to become free from the controlling country. In most cases, it would have to be through revolution or a denial of the right to rule by the colony. The controlling country can also give up the colony voluntarily (as in with Spain's rule over American colonies, it became too expensive to run their colonies) and basically let the colony go. It all comes down to either the country not wanting the colony anymore, or not being able to maintain order anymore.

Well if you are speaking of the United States the answer is simple...You simply go into an existing country full of Native Americans; then you attempt some sort of dialogue when you learn that that country is full of natural resources such as furs, timber and undeveloped land; then you encourage the inhabitants to forget their beliefs, and instead embrace Christianity; then you chase away or force the Native Americans off of THEIR land; and then you kill/murder the Native Americans who have the audacity to either fight back or challenge you, and then you bring in your own people and steal what never belonged to you in the first place.
In short, you became "free" by stealing land and goods, and taking away the freedom of others.
....and that about sums it up.

The only way I am aware of is to kill enough of those who do not want that country to be free. Too bad there is not a more civil way.

Meep is right. There's always somebody who will try to exploit people who won't fight. Only fighters remain free for long, and only for as long as they remain fighters.
