buy ready made pieces and just put it together. then decorate but....
work with big pieces instead of smaller ones. because if you use smaller ones, the support isnt as good and there are more chances that the house will crack. also small pieces are very hard to 'glue' together
and use really good frosting that keeps the pieces togeter very well.

Gingerbread, if left uncovered, unfortunately will get soft as the sugar in the cookies absorb moisture from the air. So, if you want to make a bigger house, you'll need some structure to hold it up, especially if you plan to keep it longer than for a couple of days.
A few of us just built a 3 feet gingerbread hotel and we used a model to help hold the gingerbread pieces together as we had to leave it on display for a month. If you use a similar structure that you can use to "glue" your gingerbread pieces, you can pretty much scale the house to any size you want. All you need is a good amount royal icing to glue all the pieces together and to the board. The rest is up to your imagination.
Also, with the wooden model, you can keep the wooden pieces for the next time you feel like making another big gingerbread house. Measure out the wooden pieces and then go to home depot to have them cut it into size, or have a friend do it for you.
Oh, one more thing. Measure and cut your gingerbread pieces as close to the sizes you want before baking. This will result in cleaner cut pieces. If you cut the gingerbread to size after baking, you risk breaking the pieces as it cools, unless you do it while it's warm.
I have step-by-step pictures of the gingerbread hotel that we made in my blog. There are more pictures in my photo album. http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-pTfMd6U9aKe3t.b3H.R8iA--?cq=1

Walmart and Kmart sell a kit for about $10. You could buy 2 and go from there using the parts and your own imagination!! Have fun!
