Are there any links that would be helpful in finding things to consider when starting a theater from ..basically..nothing? Any advice? What makes a theater non-profit?

First I would do a survey and actually try to find out how interested people are. Then if you get enough people, figure out if there are enough w/necessary skills who can build/paint sets, do costumes, lighting, music, etc.

Then figure out where the funding will come from. Maybe hold fundraisers around the community.

Make sure you have a place to hold the plays, too. That could cost money also.

If you feel there's enough interest and possible money, then go for it. Small towns need culture, too!

It would be fine to start in a smaller community any day. That is better yet for a non-profit you can associate with a church of your choice and donate some of the profits. Or you can donate to the Cancer association etc. and you have to register as non-profit and when you get the applications you will see the rules. Go online and get the criteria on the subject. Look under the business sections, corporate structures for non-profit organizations. Look under your county or state government for all of that for you are subject to their approval.

there's a theater community in a small town near my home. they put on performaces every year, one being a play about the history of the town. it has actually become a huge deal in this area- check with your local arts council and see about getting funding, maybe put up fliers and have a meeting with all those interested.

one thing our theater community does is have an annual 'children's play', where people of the community pay so much for their kids to get to be in a play- it earns money for the theater and the kids have a good time.

good luck!

Not crazy, but certainly challenging. (See "Waiting for Guffman") Also, potentially a lot of fun and very fulfilling. Almost all theaters are non-profit, but I believe you're asking about "not for profit" tax status. For this you need to organize as a 503c(?) corporation. Not a huge undertaking, but you will probably need to consult a lawyer to make sure you do it right. Break a leg!
