Different mattresses are comfortable for different people. Go to all the bed stores in your area and actually lay down on the mattresses. It's nice to take a friend so you have someone to talk to and don't look feel like an idiot doing it all by yourself. Last mattress I bought I spend quite a bit of time trying different mattresses, bought the one I liked best which happened to be mid-range expensive and I've been really really happy with it for the last five years. I didn't like the pillow tops at all.
I had a really nice salesperson help me at one store, where I ended up actually buying. I had always thought firmer mattresses were better for your back, but he told me that for women a somewhat softer mattress is sometimes better for thier back, especially for side sleepers like me, because our hip and shoulder can sink into the mattress but our waist is still supported. Happy mattress shopping!

some people like the kind that are really soft, tat you sink itno. i find that they're comfy for about 3 minutes and then your back starts aching.
i personally like the kind that are bouncy but not too soft, they're good for your back like the sleeping on the floor method, but not as uncomfy!
then there's the kind that you sleep on for one night and then from then on your shape is molded in the mattress. that's excellent for people who sleep in the same position and don't move all night (which i am not!).
there's always water beds, but i don't really like sleeping on plastic not to mention all the worry!
the best of the best are the ones for old people which have a remote control so that you canadjust the mattress to exactly the position you want, but they're pretty pricey.
hope this helped!

I agreed with the sealy pillowtop for years!
Then i tried the sealy trueform ( a tempurpedic knockoff..but actually more comfortable than tempurpedic!) and i LOVE it!
My husband and I like different levels of firmness and we both love this mattress, We didn;t care for the sleep number only because his # was so high and mine so low, that he was leaning towards my side of the bed and said it wasn't comfy.
