With an American passport you can get a transit or entry visa for Kenya upon arrival in the Jomo Kenyatta airport in Nairobi.
I have an American passport and have often travelled to Kenya, always getting my visas upon arrival. There is a little wait (depending upon how many passengers need a visa) but it is quite easy.
