In Windows XP click Start, point to All Programs, click Set Program Access and Defaults. If you don't see that then go into the control panel and choose "Add Remove Programs." Then choose "Set Program Access and Defaults." The last option is Custom. Make sure the dot is in the circle next to Custom. Then Click on the down arrows at the far right of the word custom. Configure that specifies Windows Media Player as the default media player. Click OK and that should do it.

Pick the music file you want to open. Right click it. Click "open with" . click choose program. You should get a list of all of your media players. There should be a box bellow that should say something like use this program from now on (sorry I do not know the exact quote since I do not have the English version of windows). Click that box and then click window media player.
