Do not get a DELL, get a Gateway computer, they last way longer...a good price is 500.00-800.00 for a good one that will last.

First you have to decide what you are going to use it for! Surfing the net requires less of a computer than intense gaming, etc.
When you start adding things like a good Video card, more RAM, larger hard drive, faster CPU, etc. the price goes up. A GOOD computer for YOU could run less than $1000 to several thousand. Don't forget the monitor, CD/DVD player/burner, Bluetooth, Firewire, etc. all add to the price.
Add the cost of whatever commercial software you might need when figuring your price. If you have old software, make sure it will run on the new machine!!

WRONG QUESTION.
First.... decide WHAT you need it to do.
Second.... Find the prices on computers that will do what you need. (A computer simply to surf the web may be had as cheap as $200+/-, while an "all out" gamer may run well over $1500.)
Third.... Whatever you get, do NOT get a pre-loaded OS.
If you later "update" the hardware, the "original" pre-loaded OS may NOT recognize the system and will refuse to load!
Get your OS SEPARATELY from your computer, even if it makes the total cost a bit more!

The best way to find out is to go to a few sites like dell.com and look. I personally like dell's and our company has literally installed hundreds of systems. The other important features about buying computers is warranty and service. Its hard to beat dell when you consider price, longevity, service and warranty......

You should get a gateway. They have good prices starting from $450- a lot. E-machines are even better, more expensive but better quality.
