No it's not true that first time mothers give birth before their due date... my due date was right on, but my baby decided to come one week late exactly-so I had him at 41 weeks. My mom had me 2 weeks before her due date, a friend who was due around the same time as me had her baby right on her due date, another 2 days after her due date, and another almost a week after her due date... so as you can see, it's different for everyone- it just all depends on that precious little baby-when they want to come out- my doctor told me no matter what you do, it all depends on the baby when the baby is ready- they are the deciding factor.
I know you get impatient towards the end of the pregnancy and just want to get it over with-I felt the same... but that baby isn't ready just yet, so try to hang in there! Know they won't let you go over 2 weeks-I was supposed to be induced at 41 weeks exactly at 9:30am-and went into labor at 1:30am that night before! But since you are only 38 weeks, that extra couple of weeks is good for them!
Goodluck and congrats!

My baby son who is nearly 7 months came 38 weeks and 3 days, so he was 4 days early!
I'm sure your baby will come when you least expect it!
Good luck with the birth and your new baby!

My first daughter was born 17 weeks early (at 23.2 weeks gestation) weighing 450 grams. She's now 3.5 years old and going great. Please treasure every moment you have while pregnant, I was looking forward to having a fat belly etc. My stomach was still flat when I gave birth. Don't be in too much of a rush.

My daughter was born 6 days past her orginal due date. Congrads on the baby on the way. Word of advice .... try taking walks and stimulation to try and give nature a little push.

I had to be induced when I was 9 days past my due date because nothing was happening. I know it's hard(especially the last few weeks), but it won't be much longer now.

lots of kids do come a few days before their due date but some come 2 weeks after it just varies, just make sure you stay active an d walk around alot unless they put you on bed rest but you sound pretty healthy to me so just go walk a mile and shell be sure to come early.
