An MBA from a top school is a great way to change fields and to increase salary. The average student at top schools make six figures coming out of their MBA programs -- which represents an increase of between 50%-100%.
There is a little bit of a dropoff in the increase once you get past the top 15, and a big dropoff once you get past the top 40 schools.
My opinion is that it is not worth getting an MBA in a full time program unless you can go to a top school. But for those students, it is well worth it.
My opinion is biased, but informed. I have an MBA from Duke, a PhD in Business Administration (Finance) from Berkeley and have taught at MIT and Wharton.

The MBA, or Master of Business Administration, is a professional degree awarded by schools of management or business that train students in the theory and practice of professional management. In my humble opinion, professional management is the effective organization and direction of institutions and resources, including people, systems, finances, materials and information, used to achieve organizational objectives and goals.
The MBA program is designed to help students develop a sound understanding of fundamental business principles and gain competency in business data processing so they can begin a career in business administration.
In addition to the MBA Program,it prepare students for careers in marketing, accounting, taxation, finance, human resource and other areas, which will further enable them to progress towards a career based on their strengths and abilities.
With concentrations in human resources, marketing, management and finance, students can chose a program that compliments their career goals. Further, students who desire to develop strong leadership, business communication, global economics, finance and analytical skills , the MBA program provides them with the skill set needed to be successful in the international business industry.
Therefore, yes MBA is worth it nowadays as after its' completion you can take advantage of a job market that continues to increase in demand for skilled professionals in this competitive job market.

Yes, most certainly. It gets you to the top of the resume pile. And the jobs you get called for are decent jobs. It's also an incredible learning experience (depending on the institution). I did an online M.B.A. and am thrilled already with the result. By the way, a severe shortage of CEOs is predicted, beginning five years from now.
