From what I've heard, "The DaVinci Code" sounds like a pretty interesting novel. However, since it's been so overhyped, I have no desire to watch the movie or read the novel. Does anyone else understand where I'm coming from?

Absolutely! If everyone else is reading it or watching it, I don't want it. At work I hear everyone talking about this TV show or that movie, and automatically I say to myself, "Well let's not see that one." I like stuff that is outside of the realm of the general mainstream audience. Not that I'm like artsy or anything, but I like to watch or read things that can give me something different to talk about.

That is a hard question because often books that are popular become popular for a reason. However, that reason usually isn't because they are quality works of art, but because they are fast-paced or formulaic. I find that asking a few trusted friends who have already read the popular item how they liked it is the best way of sorting out the items that are popular because they are good, from those that aren't. I think ruling something out just because its popular can sometimes be a mistake. For instance, Beloved was very popular for a while, and it was an excellent book. However, The Da Vinci Code was popular as well, and it wasn't great.

Yeh I get where your coming from. I read the Da Vinci Code before I really knew what it was to be honest.. Usually if things are overhyped, then when I watch the film or read the book, I'll be like 'Erm.. that was lame.. Not as good as I expected..' etc.. That's what happened with 'The Departed' I think.. and loadsa others.. Take it easy =)

I agree, I have found so often they are a disappointment. I have also found the reverse to be true. Books & movies that don't get attention so often turn out to be the ones I enjoy. Letting myself be lead by the media I would have missed them. Another form of peer pressure You could say.

Yes indeedy I have wasted too much of my life falling for the hype because somehow it burns out the anticipation somehow it cheapens my enjoyment and stunts my interest, enough is enough I feel quite capable of picking my own entertainment I don't need it repeatedly shoved down my throat. glad to hear another who feels the same way I have yet to see gone with the wind because of that very reason.
