I am stumped by this question also. There may be a similarity between Romanesque Cathedrals and the School of Athens, but the Gothic Cathedral is a purely Northern European invention. Look at Westminster Abbey as an example of Gothic Architecture or Notre Dame in Paris. I think the answer to your question is they were opposites.
