No need to get freaked out - the best way to get from east Chicago to west Chicago is I-290. An alternative route is Roosevelt Road or Cermak Road, which both go all the way from the city to the western suburbs.
By the way, Chicago's a relatively easy city to drive in - it's quite flat and the streets are wide - and really, the only unsafe areas are on the far west and far south sides. Even there, with locked doors, nothing is going to happen to you.

Number one it's time to get over the perpetual fear of some parts of Chicago primarily the south side or anywhere past 22nd street. Not all parts of the city is so bad you can't be there. I've gone through some really tough edged neighborhoods, and it's been fine. If you know the area well you know where to go and where to stay out of. You want directions, but you havent been really specific of where you're planning to go.

I assume you don't mean you're "freaked out" because you're scared of going through a bad neighborhood, but "freaked out" by the expressway system, the speed at which they drive, all the traffic and the construction work. It's not so bad; it mostly depends on what time of day you drive through. If you can time your drive to pass through in mid afternoon, after the daytime rush and before the evening rush, you'll be OK.

Don't Panic!
It depends on where you are coming/going: North, Central South?
North would be Touchy, Devon or North Ave.
Central is 90, 290, Roosevelt, possibly Cermac
South is I-55, Archer, 55th, 159th, I-80/294
I have more ideas, tell me more specifics.

lol. as a new yorker, this is funny. why are you freaked out?? mapquest it and find any major arteries (i.e. turnpike, parkway, highway) that run east to west. they usually don't go through the local neighborhoods that i assume really freak you out.
