Did he say "square yard" or "cubic yard" - adding cubic measurement means the depth of the concrete. A cubic yard is 3 ft by 3ft by 3ft. How deep do you want your patio cement to be? 3 inches or 4 inches would be standard. 12 x 12 x 3 = 1/4 of a cubic foot. 12 x 12 x 4 = 1/3 of a cubic foot.

RE:
how big is a square yard?
We want to put in a cement patio in the back yard. We measured 25 ft by 25 feet. The contractor says he charges $180. a square yard. How big is a square yard in comparison to what we have measured out, and how much will this cost us?

A square yard is 3 foot by 3 foot.
So, 25x25 feet = 625 sqare feet
Divide by 3 feet per yard = 208.33 sq yards.
Multiply that by $180 = $22500, which is rediculous.
Are you certain that he didn't say a cubic yard? That's more realistic.
Since you will probably only lay 4 inches of concrete, you will require 7.72 cubic yards = $838.
Check out this calculator: http://www.soilbuildingsystems.com/CubicYard.php
Good luck.

A square yard is 3 ft x 3 ft, or 9 square feet. You have 625 square feet, or about 69.4 square yards. 70 square yards would cost $12,600.

25' X 25' = 625 sq.ft.
625 sq.ft. divided by 9 = 69.44 Yd (or sq.yd)
69.44 sq.yd. X $180 = $12,499.20
