Once a snake's cage is set up correctly and the animal is feeding regularly, snakes make for excellent pets. They aren't pushy. will lay there to be petted, and if you keep track of the head, then they tend to stay in one location. If you are tired of playing with the snake it can be placed back in the cage and wouldn't complain one bit about being left there for a few hours or a few months. Snakes are very simplistic creatures, in that they don't formulate plans or realize they can or should hurt you. Rather they are motivated by food and generally ignore most other things that aren't food. Understanding the nature of snakes is key to keeping large snakes. Typically a snake over 10 ft is incredibly dangerous to a novice that forgets that the snake isn't very smart and deeply motivated by food.
The same feeling of astonishment or disgust could be viewed by a snake owner when looking at a dog owner. Not only does the dog have the whole house to mess in and destroy, but an owner will lower themselves on the ranking hierarchy and risk being bitten because they fail to understand the animal before they buy it. Some breeds of dogs are heavily dependent on beauty being in the eye of the beholder.
Any pet needs to be heavily researched before buying, and a place for them needs to prepared ahead of time too. This is the leading cause of dog bites and snake related fatalities.

Retics get too big for starter pets and they're not the most friendly either. They're not sinister, just misunderstood, certainly not hideous. They think with their belly, more than anything. I don't recommend burmese or rock pythons either, unless you're well experienced with them. It's too bad that the movies have given these guys such a bad rap!
I would recommend starting with a captive bred ball python, or go with boas, like a rosy or sand boa. Kingsnakes and cornsnakes are pretty easy going and get to be 5-6 feet. Any of these guys are very tolerable of human contact.

Not only are retics very large, they are very tempermental. Only a very experinced reptile person should have them as a pet. I don't think they are hideous looking at all. Snakes and other reptiles are quite fascinating and the thing that scares most people is the fact they are so different than mammals.

The kind of people that should own them are responible pet owners who know what they are getting into. I have a cornsnake right now as a starter snake, and plan on getting a black rat snake once my huge cage for him is done. A good owner needs to realize that they will probably get bit with how agressive they are

Probably no one should keep a retic as a pet. They get really large and can be very aggro. If a large snake is desire, male burmese or female BCCs are a good option, maxing out at 14 and 10 feet, respectively.
The good thing is that in most areas, snakes that large are against the law. It's still possible to obtain them, but at least you can't get them from petstores.
It sure is impressive to see snakes that large in zoos, though!
