having been to Alaska a few years ago.. I know it's not a holiday destination per se and that you have to make your way to Chile [I think] to get a boat there.. but is it really an expensive/difficult undertaking if you are not a research scientist working there???

Do you want to visit the shores, or do you want to go inside Antarctic? These are 2 different things. As already said, it is rather easy to find operators who offer cruises to see the penguins and glaciers from the shores. Especially the Russians are quite good at it.
On the other hand, if you want to go inside the continent, if gets much more difficult. There is only one operator worldwide who offer flights inside Antarctica. There might be different companies offering a flight, but, at the end it is always the same one who makes the job: ALE (Antarctic logitics and Expeditions) They fly to Patriot Hills base from Punta Arenas (Chile). Basically, only mountaineers go there. It costs about $ 20.000.- to go there. Make sure you have the right insurances, because a rescue out of Antarctica costs you $ 150.000.- The travel season is very short:November - January. After that, Patriot Hills is totally dismanteled until next year. The number of flights is very limited, +/- 5 flights a year!! If you want to go to the South Pole, you have to go there on skis. No dogs allowed in A. anymore. You will not be welcome at the Amundsen-Scott US Base on the south Pole!

i worked with british antartic survey for 5 years and it was fantastic, saw a lot of cruise ships on the peninsula but the best was a russian ice breaker that circumnavicated the whole of antartica and was fairly cheap for what you got, cant remember the name of ship but try a web search for rusian cruises in antartica

GAP Adventures http://www.gapadventures.com/ do cruises from South America to the Antarctic and you get a day or so actually walking around.

Obviously it's not a typical travel destination.
I think that first of all you have to be informed about the weather conditions.
