I think it is ok depending on the other names around it. That makes a big difference. And you could call him Xan for short.

It's not that unique. Xander is 279 on the list for 2005 (1184 babies in 2005), and rising. Zander is 332 (896 babies in 2005), and rising. Together, there are more X/Zanders than Andy, Corey, Troy, Trey, Oliver, Brett, etc., which aren't very unique at all.
Alexander was 12 on the list. So, that's a lot of kids with the nickname or name "Xander" running around in kindergarten.

Unique names, especially for boys, are not a real great idea. It is unfortunate, but he will be judged by his name more heavily than a girl would.

It would be better to go with a traditional name that is not common. Consider the names of billionaires, inventors, Biblical figures, etc. (Avoid too-obvious things like movie or sports stars- lots of people use them, and it is usually embarrassing 20 years later.)

HOWEVER... in the book 'Freakonomics', the author does an interesting study of names- which names say the parents came from a richer, well-educated background, and which suggest they came from a low-income, low education background. He also takes a stab at what the 'hot' names for the elite in 2015.

The name 'Sander' is on it! The same name you mention with no cute spelling. It is considered a 'power name' now and is expected to become better over the next few years.

Just FYI, some other boy's names on the list include: Harper, Liam, Beckett, Asher, Keyon, Carter, Cooper, and Aidan.

It sounds German or something. I've heard of Xanders before, PhD types. He may get a job in a University or a research lab.

Depends on the surname. Xander can be a nice African American or Central European name, and it may even work with some Native American surnames. But doesn't really match most Hispanic or Asian names I can think of. And definitely not Celtic. Xander McDonald is horrid.

I think Xander is a cute name but not as unique anymore. My husband wanted to name our oldest son Jagger Storm! LOL. I could not let that happen, i personally think its a horrible name. He was named Cody. I also like the name Corbin Gage for a boy. You can search for names on http://www.babynames.com Good Luck =)

Cool nickname. It is short for Alexander.
I would go ahead and name him Alexander, and give him the nickname Zander (as a nickname only).

Otherwise, I love the sound of zander.

He was in Buffy the Vampire slayer. I like it. But then I like unusual names, Anakin Rhett never heard anyone called those names apart from the characters in the films.

I love it too, but it does remind me of Buffy's sidekick on the "Vampire Slayer" series.

Name your boy whatever you like. He's yours to name !!

When i was thinking of names for my kids,
I would imagine myself yelling the
name out the front door,
like calling the kid in for dinner,
and if it sounded ridiculous at that
point I would keep thinking of more names !!

Good Luck.
