You heard wrong, Dell Laptops SUCK. Visit a retailer like Costco or Staples that provide you with a money-back deal and possible support. Look first at Toshiba. They are well made with good technical support. Costco will back you up further with a no-questions asked return policy... Just keep your receipt.
Dual Core and 4 hours battery? Hey, you should consider having a spare battery and limiting your battery use whenever possible.
1 or 2GB of RAM, YES, you can add memory to any new laptop.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

OUCH! You should have asked a couple days ago.
If you had gone out on Black Friday ( the day after Thanksgiving AKA Yesturday) you might have gotten one for under 300 dollars includeing the memory upgrade (sold sepereately) and I think it came with scanners and printers and cases and software and giftcards at some stores. You would have needed several people to get involved, needed an extra person or two for memory cards ( I think there were 1 GB for LapTops for like 25 dollars at one of the stores),. and you probably would have needed a credit card. But this isn't too helpful now :(
Check those places haveing sales though, because some still have them running today (you might still need extra people involved). I just closed out the tabs/windows I had with deal list >.< I can remember the places haveing specials for Black Friday included Circuit City, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Staples,.. hopefully one of those still has some sale prices today for lap tops.
P.S. Go to Dell as last resort, they tend to have higher prices during these sales. NEVER EVER get anything called Alien wear or Alien ware,.. whichever it is they are WAY over priced,.. it's all about looking "cool" with them.

major belongings you ought to have: middle Duo or middle 2 Duo Processor, something above a million.5 ghz twin middle will be adequate for the subsequent couple years esp. in case you at the instantaneous are not doing heavy images or video processing. when you're making plans on getting vista you ought to get 2 gb of ram by way of the indisputable fact that's worthless with absolutely one gig. If this is going to be your major notebook it ought to have adequate skill to very last for decades and that's more confusing to improve laptops than computers. Pay some hundred funds (euro/pounds) and this is going to pay off contained in the destiny
