I am going to the doctor's on Monday for a follow-up. I went last week and they said that when I come back in a week they will give me an enema. The doctor told me that it will consist of three doses of soap, cator oil, and water. I never heard of this and I am scared.
Here are my questions:
Is it scary?
What will they do?
What is an enema?
Is it painful?
How long does it take?
How is it administered?
Anything else about it that I should know?
Please tell me in detail anything and everything you know about them.
My information:
I am a 13 year-old female. My doctor is a female, but sometimes I have a male. I think the male will administer it.
What is an anal exam?!?!
After it is given, do you run straight to the bathroom and do the doctor's stay in the bathroom with you

Hi there. I am a nursing student a recently learned alllll about this. Soap enemas are not overly common. However, the most common soapsud enema consists primarily of a bucket and tubing. Firstly, an enema is a procedure that is used to clean out your bowels, and by clean out your bowels, I mean CLEAN. No poop left in there whatsoever! IT is usually administered before a rectal (anal) exam or before surgery to prevent the poo from blocking anything they're trying to look for, or to prevent poo from entering other body cavities and infecting them. Anyway, the most common type of enema is the Fleet enema. This is what EVERYONE has. It is basically a prepared solution in a bottle with a narrow tip. The tip is inserted into your anus and is basically squirted in there..haha. You hold the liquid in until you cannot anymore and you basically go to the bathroom. There is also a drinkable solution of Fleet available which tastes AWFUL. But the same thing happens...you drink it, then you go to the bathroom. The soapsuds is when the solution is in a "bucket" and a tube runs from the bucket to your anus. The solution enters you by means of gravity as the bucket is held above you. Same thing applies though, you hold it in and then run to the bathroom. The doctor does not have to be in the bathroom with you. I think you would want some privacy. Ask your doctor about flushing the toilet. They might want to see what the poo looks like before you flush to see if there are any abnormalities. It's not a fun procedure, but it does not take long! Hope this helps, and good luck!

i agree with lyona, im sure its nothing to worry about but its normal for u to feel scared. as mentioned, ul b instructed to position urself left side lying, a hose will be inserted in ur anus (it wont hurt coz the nurse will surely use some k-y jelly) and at the other end of the hose is the solution, (Fleet enema) the nurse will raise the solution until the gravity pulls it inside ur anus, u will feel slightly uncomfortable, especially when yuo're ask to hold it still inside until u feel the urge to defecate. there! i guess iv been a good student to my teacher by inparting some pre-examination infos. hehe.. im a nursing student by the way :)
