We are looking in the northeast area but most homes are out of our price range.

dallas texas is the best area by far. but if you want the northeast try the upstate NY area around Utica/Syracuse

Try the Pocono area of Pennsylvania. median house price is about $180K......plenty of 3 bed, 2 bath houses for MUCH less. Fixer uppers are also plentiful and can be purchased for even less than that.

A nice house in a nice neighborhood at that price, you need to look in the south.
