To Wii owners, is it necessary to have an SD memory card?

I know there's 512mb of flash memory available so I wanted to know how fast that runs out. I'm guessing that downloading the ROMs will suck that up real fast which is why I'm considering getting an expansion card.

I dont own a Wii, but if youre wanting to upload pictures, yes it is necessary to have an SD Memory card, but i dont know otherwise
