I know people have goals in life and make plans to reach those goals but do plans really work? Whenever there are so many variables in a persons life isnt is more a case of sheer luck if any plan actually succeeds. Whats your experience? Have your plans worked? Did you really reach the goal you were aiming for? Perhaps you exceeded your wildest dreams without trying? Just curious to know if hard work and planning really do get a person to where they want to be.

Sometimes plans will work out if you think you have covered every contingency.

There are always so many interdependent variables but you can gain from experience and change your plans slightly tyo attain the same goals.

Usually, they work out great because I try to be prepared. There are some circumstances that pop up to interfere with almost any long term plan, but I don't consider a simple modification as a failure. My most recent long term plan did indeed fail miserably, but not because it wasn't a good plan. I failed to consider the possibility of life threatening, or crippling illness. After a few years of college, clinicals, certification exams, and work in my chosen field my health failed. Oh well, not a big loss. Any goal we set (within the limit of our known abilities) and prepare for (with allowances for unplanned events) can normally be reached. The fact that I completed the training and education, and did indeed do my fair share of surgery work, at least in my mind, means that the plan succeeded for the most part.

It took me five long years to complete my BS degree and drove 45 miles each way and had a family and a lot of animals to take care of. And there is always speed bumps on your road to your goal. Stick to it and sooner or later you are where you want to be.

Yep, mine usually do. But it takes a lot of planning and being able to be flexible so those barriers don't get in the way!
