You did not say what was in the glass, or how much, so this answer will be a guess based upon a theory with no relation to actual scientific testing. Here we go...

Over time, the individual items contained within the glass expanded and contracted due to temperature variations within your home. This expansion and contraction caused the contents to settle lower and lower within the glass. Additionally, because different substances expand and contract at different rates, the contents of the glass would also change position in relation to each other slightly with each expansion and contraction.

During the expansion/contraction phase prior to the event, some of the items in the glass aligned themselves in such a way that they form a solid bridge from one side of the glass to the other. When you pick up the glass, the contents were in the midst of an expansion phase and the heat from your hand added just enough extra heat to the system to push the expansion beyond what the glass could withstand.

It was this internal force pushing out on the sides of the glass that pushed it to the breaking point.

Although this probably isn't what happened, I think I deserve 10 points for my wonderfully overactive imagination, don't you? :>)
