They interact with people, i.e. customers. They create a kind of relationship between the company/organisation and the coustomers. The main motive is to make loyal customers who don't go to rivals in the business. For that, public relation officials have to be polite and interact with the customer in such a way that the customer feels improtant. This is an image building profession so the offlicials have to interact one-to-one with public directly and inhance the business.

Do you mean what do people do in the Public Relations business? Well, they manage a company's relations with a number of "publics" like, for instance, investors, government agencies and the press.

To give you an example, they would organise press conferences and reunite a number of media representatives. Or they would organise congresses and meetings where a company promotes its products. The PR agent always tries to convey a good "image" of the company he represents.

On the other hand, if your question is why do people do public relations business, well there are a number of reasons, but I would say mostly marketing reasons (for instance, in order to simplify advertising or media management and "outsource" it to the PR firm).
