Burnt dust, believe it or not. I am a janitor in large government buildings, I get the same residue coming out the ceiling vents/registers when the heating is turned on.

First off..If you have a forced hot air heating system, my guess would be a cracked heat exchanger. This black film is being blown into your home through the blower. You will also notice more of a concentration of black coming up from the heat vents up the walls. Don't ignore this, have your furnace checked out now.

Could be mold, but do you burn scented candles? If so, it is likely something called "Carbon Tracking". The carbon produced by burning scented, paraffin-based candles in glass jars enters your furnace and becomes statically charged and then "clumps" together and sticks to any surface it can find.
Very unlikely that it is caused by your propane furnace, They typically don't produce soot, and you would probably be dead if the heat exchanger had this large of a crack. But to be safe, check the cabon monoxide level in your home.

It sounds like something burning improperly and coming into your house. Check your systems. Have an expert check out your propane system. Change your filters more often and do make sure it isn't mold. Don't quit looking until you find the cause. It sounds very unhealthy.

I think it might be mold or mildew. You might want to do some research on it because some can make you sick. Try wiping it down with a bleach solution and see if that helps. Godloveya.

sounds like a powdery mold or some sort of sooty dust. either one may not be healthy. I would call someone in to take a look.

Sounds to me like your flue is plugged up, and the flame is venting into your home.
