I would go out in the community and hang around with them. True knowledge about people doesn't come from books.

One word, "Observe" I think you can learn alot just being by watching.
Ask some questions of people you know, in a fun way, not intrusively.
It's amazing how many people who have been married 20 or more years don't little things about the person they are married too, that can tell of their personalities alot.
What is their favorite color? Flower? Movie? What happened in their life before they were there spouse? Things like that.
So often we don't really know the people that are closest to us.

I would volunteer in places where I would be in contact with a lot of people - hospital, cancer care center, soup kitchen, etc. I would consider getting a job in retail sales or fast food service, places where you can very quickly learn a lot about people.

The best thing to do in my opinion, would be to go to places where there are many people.( Malls, parks, etc.) and just watch what they do. It's free, and you will learn much.
