I have a new friend who claims they are a mileage tester for a large vehicle manufacturer. They say their job is to drive 500 miles a day and that they get a new car to take out every day - is this a real job or is he just cow pooing me?

What qualifications (other than a drivers licence) do you need?

i know they do mileage testing by putting the car on a rolling road machine that also simulates things like driving over pot holes to see how the car fares, if anything breaks, that kinda thing.

That testing is done over distances in the region of 10,000 miles and is done stationary in a test building.

It would have to be a pretty crappy car manufacturer if they wanted to know what the car was like after only seven or eight hours of driving. Maybe even fewer hours if he like has to drive the car really really fast etc etc *yawn* i don't know for sure but it does smell a little of something brown and fresh ;)

There is an element of truth in what your friend is saying. However, to do a mileage test on a vehicle, you don't need to get an employee to literally drive the vehicle. All you need to do is give a driver a special log book to note down the mileage and fuel intake of a particular vehicle (ensuring the weight is constant).

After about a month, you can get a fairly accurate idea of the mileage per litre/gallon the vehicle will do.

Having said that, a manufacturer is more likely to put the vehicle on rollers rather than have the car driven for a month!

I would suggest he does the paperwork and probably gets to park the vehicles!

Yes, it is a real job but it has different levels. Some are paid just to put mileage on vehicles to see how they will last, others are paid to check it all works as they use it and recommend improvements to it.
