When I get up and leave my computer, I would like to have my monitor immediately go to a blank screen by using a keyboard shortcut. There was such a shortcut in an older Windows version.

Press alt+F4.

Or just activate screensaver or set powersaver option to something very short time so that monitor goes to powersave.

There is an option within the Control panel. Are you talking about when the screen saver goes on? That option is in the same screen as the screen saver options. If you are talking about after it goes into standby, that option is under performance and maintenance I believe. I'd give better instructions, but I can't actually check because I just got Vista. Good luck.

There is a command-line tool called NirCmd that you can use to turn your monitor off and perform other system.

Download the program from:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

Then you can make a shortcut for the following command line:
"nircmd.exe monitor off"

Then, you can add the shortcut to your desktop or quick launch bar for quick access, or assign a shortcut key to it from there.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
