For instance, many bands that get labeled 'college music' tend to be obscure, but I find that I love a lot of this kind of music. Just curious as to your thoughts, thanks!

I'm within an older generation. There is a woman singer you may be familiar with. She has been dead for some time now. Her name is Karen Carpenter. I Have everything she has ever recorded. If you just listen to this woman's voice when she sings, it can send chills down your spine. She has the most beautiful and natural voice I've ever heard. When I was younger, kids my age thought I listened to 'different' music as well. It's all about being yourself.

I am more the opposite. I tend to dismiss the bands most people like. And I like some of the bands many, if not most, either like or have never cared one way or the other about.

I tend to like indie bands as well, and artists off the mainstream radar. One songwriter who never really got his due is Townes Van Zandt. Even my friends don't like his music much. I put on one of his albums once and received a lot of perplexed looks and "why are you playing country music?" questions from the cool set.

He wrote some lovely songs though... songs like "To Live Is to Fly" with a simple, heartfelt lyricism that was never phony or contrived.

Soulwax.

Most people associate them with 2 Many DJs (a "bastard pop" project of the two brothers in Soulwax), therefore dismiss them as crappy dance music, or whatever.

They're actually a totally brilliant, totally overlooked Belgian rock band. And we loves them. :3

Ben Folds, Richard Shindell, 5 Chinese Brothers, Great Big Sea, Shawn Colvin, Freedy Johnston...basically smart, mature songwriter types.

Ben Folds does manage to pull airplay, but he does not get his due. He should be declared King of the Universe.
