When doing vigourous exercise, the body cannot keep up with the amount of oxygen needed. So it carries a form of respiration which does not require oxygen. After the exercise however you have a oxygen dept. This means that even after you finish exercising you are still breathing heavily as you body needs oxygen to nuetralise the latic acid which is produced during anaerobic respiration (latic acid is the reason your muscles hurt while exercising)

The aerobic process produces much more energy compared with the anaerobic but it takes relatively more time for an aerobic reaction than an anaerobic. In processes requirng sudden release of energy like spark starts or sudeen runs the respiration is anaerobic which in return causes the production of Lactic acid and the crippling of the muscles for a while.
