The mechanic at the time told me to be careful as he didnt know if the overheating had caused any damage to the cylinder head.... how do i tell if there was any damage as i presume it is best caught as early as possible?

keep an eye on your coolant level and the colour of your exhaust, if it suddenly starts blowing white when it's warm and the coolant level is dropping the head gasket is gone or there is a crack or a warp induced by your overheating incident, hope it's OK.

Get a compression test done on the cylinders, you would have
to drive a car hot for a certain period of time before any severe
damage would occur. If you pulled over and parked it, then had
it picked up, you should be okay.

say do you know where the cylinder head is? If so look at it. See if there is any damage or marks on it. Then If not, just replace the fan.

i guess the best way to be sure is to get the compression presure measured.if that is ok,then there is nothing wrong with either the cylinder head or the engine block,or the gasket in between..
