A relative of the sled is the bobsled, it rather is a lengthy narrow sled geared up with a steerage mechanism. The bobsled is designed for speed, and in many situations contains one or 2 people for racing. A toboggan, or flat sled, is a good floor it rather is grew to develop into up interior the front.

a toboggan is a long narrow sled without runners, made of strips of wood running lengthwise and curled up at the front, used for coasting downhill on snow.
A sled is a small vehicle sliding over snow: a small low vehicle on ski-style or other runners, designed to be pulled over snow or ice by people or dogs.
So they are basically the same thing.
