Are waiters supposed to take food from the right, and serve from the left, is it the other way round, or doesnt it matter?

Serve from left, take from right.

This generally really only applies to fine dining and the waiter/tress should use his/her discretion if there's an obstacle (wine bottle, person's arm) that may prevent following this protocol.

I'm 13 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and I've been letting things slide a bit more than normal. We are in the process of buying our first house, both in school, he works full-time, leaving me with our daughter 7 days a week and my step-sons Friday through Sunday. I have days when I'm so tired that I don't even want to get out of bed. We normally make sure all the dirty dishes are in the dishwater by the end of the night, but I've been doing it every other day now. We still do our laundry on the weekends, but the clean stuff has been sitting in the clothes basket for 2 days now. I really don't see a point in hanging them up now since they'll be back in the dirty clothes basket by next Sunday. The only thing I'm still adamant about is making sure all the toys are picked up and put back where they belong. I find nothing more annoying than sitting or stepping on a toy. Do I feel bad? Ehh, not really. I need a little sanity these days instead of trying to be super mom with a spotless home and looking all dolled up. I'm pretty sure when we move into a house and get thinks the way we want, super mom will be back for a while. Trust me though, if I know we will be having company, super mommy comes out and everything is back in place for at least the day.

Technically, yes. But people are generally oblivious to the server, leaning towards each other, whispering, talking with their hands. So even though I've served fine dining events, really all the people care about is getting their food hot. Not while the server stands there trying to deliver the plate while hoping it doesn't get knocked out of their hands and having to say "Excuse me, ma'am" 800 times.

So I serve on the side that's most convenient, because we have to keep going and run back for more plates.

I used to serve from the left and remove from the right...but this only works in a long table banquet situation...most people just want to eat...as long as the food/service is good who cares? :)

No. It is serve from the left and remove from the right. A easy way to remember this that the left giveth and the right taketh away.

"You serve to the left, take off from the right. Give them ginger-peachy service or you'll spoil their appetite." This song that I learned when I was a little kid is the only way I remember the answer to your question.
