A lot of my horse for one reason or another have been paddocked by themselves. Even if they could see the other horses to reduce the stress of being on their own they always had a companion. Usually my pet goat (thought he was a horse) or my pet sheep. The horses got along great with either. My colt used to play games with the sheep and the goat. (never nasty) almost like kids chasings. Dont worry both animals give as good as they got. Should of been on funniest home videos sometimes.
The added bonus with the sheep was i was able to breed with her and sell the lambs. Goats are great also because they keep weeds down and clean up any leftover feed the horse leaves. (althought this goat had his own feed and hay) He even slept in his own stable when required next to the horse he was paddocked with if needed. These animals are lower maintenance costs than having another horse as a companion. But remember a sheep does need to be shorn and wormed. Agoat also needs to be wormed and his feet trimmed every now and then if needed.
cheers

got a lonely young pony I've been looking for a companion for too! unfortunately he's scared of donkeys so hasn't been an option for me. occasionally you'll see ponies on www.horsequset.co.uk being sold as companions. also been some free to a good home. if you get a little m&m it could live out with him. or if there is a local auction you could rescue one from going to the meat man! some horse charitys also have a lease scheme if you've got some decent grazing. they come and check all them frequently.
good luck!

The only suitable company for an old pony is another old pony! Be fair to the old boy, either foster another old pony or send him to a rest home. Theres Bransby home of rest, and Redwings.
Don't give him a cow or goat for company:(

Donkeys really are great for companions... sure you can't just keep 1 of them? Or look in your local ads for another lonely old pony?

If you really cannot get another pony then a goat or even sheep is better than no company at all.
Could you loan a companion locally or through an animal shelter?

Ask a local retirement barn, or rescue center if they have any elderly horses or ponies. Usually old lesson horses end up at places like these. Miniature horses/ponies/mules would also make a great companion.
Goats too, although some horses don't tolerate them well.
All in all it depends on your pony and your monetary status.

Your pony is a herd animal..and he will miss the herd when they are gone. Perhaps you should place him in a retirement pasture..or get a nice old nanny goat to keep your pony company. Best company would be another old pony..

Goats make very good companions for horses or ponies. Or you could get another pony.

Be careful not to auction any animals off! Mostly horses, ponies, and donkeys!!! They might get into the hands of very bad people!
