Why do people clap to show appreciation?

where did this custom come from? Are there any cultures which don't do it at all?

Great question!!!
Maybe it has something to do with the way that even babies can express happiness this way! But we teach it to them, right?
Hey, at least it's something we can all do at the same time, in our own seats, without having to have a script so we can all say "THATWAS*****GREAT!!!" and actually be heard.
