My answer was 3-methyl-2-pentene ..why is this wrong?

According to Zaitzev rule your answer is correct. I don't know if they expected you to say that still you'll get some 3-methyl-1-pentene as a by-product, or if they also wanted you to note that the E (trans) stereoisomer of 3-methyl-2-pentene is the main product.

By the way, the way you wrote the question people mistake the alkoxy base (RO-) with "dash or"

I think you didnt give us all the choices. Your answer doesn't have a chlorine, and shows one substituent and a double bond, whereas the question has 2 substituents and no double bonds.

If you meant 3-methyl-2-chloropentane, then you are incorrect because IUPAC states that you list the substituents in numeric order, 2 before 3.
