the OH is easily soluable in water

an ether has a double bond to the O, so it is harder to break up than the alcohol

Alcohol

Both alcohols and water are polar molecules, and when mixed it actually decreases the overall volume.. let me explain

If you take 100 ml of water, and 100 ml of an alcohol, and mix the two together, it actually makes a solution of less than 200 ml.

This can be explained by the polarity.
