Sometimes when i wake up it feels like the muscle that runs behind my knee (no idea what its called) has been pulled and for ten seconds after waking up there is a tremendous pain down my leg. Going to see Dcotor soon but just wondered if anyone had a clue. Im 17.

Its more likely to be a tendon or ligament problem. If you are sporty you may have injured it without realising it. You are right to be going to the doctor, good luck ....;

That is an unusual medical issue for such a young person. I would guess that - if you are very athletic and on your feet a lot in sports or running that you may have strained the tendon or have tendinitis. Both are not big problem and are easily treatable. If you are not athletic and have not physically damaged your leg - which you would know about such as falling then I would take a look at your eating habits. Do you have enough intake of calcium in your diet?

There is another possibility but it is found in much older patients than you and that is a conflict in medication and it is called restless leg syndrome. If you are taking a lot of medications or vitamins (yup I said vitamins) they may be causing your pain if you take them just before you go to bed.

I had the indentical problem you have and I am 62. It was caused by the amount of vitamins I was taking before going to bed. I changed the brand of vitamins and now only take them in the morning. I have had a buddy who had the same problem and it was caused by a conflict in his medication.

Finally - try sleeping with a pillow under your knees so you leg is not flat - it your do have inflamation of a tendon that may help you some.

I hope this helps you some. I know it hurts like hell when you get up.

It could be an inflamed tendon. During the night, it is healing while it is shortened and relaxed. When you wake up and stretch the tendon by flexing your foot, it hurts. I

If this is the problem, then it will take time to heal. Some gentle stretching exercises before you sleep would be good.

This sounds like youv'e been having night cramps. When you wake up your muscles feel bruised and sore. Try some stretches before bed and if it carries on see your GP. xx
