Also received crazy replies when I reported things - i.e. spoof responses - telling me my bankcard had been used in India and inviting me to reveal more about the abuse to personal data online.

emails can be hacked in transit.

Most Internet Providers and Email Providers will encrypt data transmission across a Virtual Private Network to keep this risk to an absolute minimum.

It could be a corruption/ virus on your machine that is scrambling content.

With regards to the bank details, India etc delete the emails without responding or you'll just end up with more.

Yes - it is possible. Do not respond to any emails you feel suspicious about.
