95% of snakes are harmless and beneficial, so don't worry about them. You may be creating a "food court" for them by attracting rodents, so make sure you have any rodent population under control. Keep trash cleaned up, don't leave open garbage or food laying around for them to get into. Rats & mice are a snake's favorite food and if snakes are around it's because they're trying to eat the rodents that can cause you some real problems.

At the hardware store, we used to sell sulphur to people to keep the snakes out of the perimeter of the yard. Problem is, if you already have snakes in the yard, they won't cross the sulphur line to leave the yard. They will just stay on your property until the rain washes the sulphur away.

I can tell you what WON'T work:
1) plastic bottles filled with water
2) putting rock salt around your yard
3) cats
4) dogs
5) animal urine

If you have a lot of snakes, I bet you don't have many rodents. Consider yourself lucky that you have them. Most won't hurt you or anyone else.

Leave them be, they wont harm you. I don't like snakes either, but I am sharing the earth with them and they help control the rodents, spiders, and other nasty creatures. Moth balls do work for enclosed spaces like under a deck or garage, etc...
