No, they don't understand this at all. If it can't be drawn along party lines they don't want to know about it. I live in an area that has a high blue collar union trade population. Most of them are Democrats and a great many of them hunt on a regular basis and have a gun collection at home. My husband is a dyed in the wool Democrat who was taught very young to shoot and hunt. He passed that along to our sons, who also do the same and are also Democrats. He has that whole "pry my gun from my cold dead fingers" thing going on but he'd take a bullet in his own head before he'd ever vote Republican.
