Of all the abortion-related policy issues facing decision-makers in this country today, parental consent or notification before a minor may obtain an abortion is one of the most difficult. Few would deny that most teenagers, especially younger ones, would benefit from adult guidance when faced with an unwanted pregnancy. Few would deny that such guidance ideally should come from the teenager's parents. Unfortunately, we do not live in an ideal world. For a variety of reasons, including fear of parental maltreatment or abuse, teenagers frequently cannot tell their parents about their pregnancies or planned abortions.

In the 34 states with laws in effect that mandate the involvement of at least one parent in the abortion decision, teenagers who cannot tell their parents must either travel out of state or obtain approval from a judge — known as a "judicial bypass" procedure — to obtain an abortion. The result is almost always a delay that can increase both the cost of the abortion and the physical and emotional health risk to the teenager, since an earlier abortion is a safer one (Paul, et al., 1999).

Currently, anti-choice members of Congress are seeking to make it even more difficult for minors living in states with mandatory parental involvement laws to obtain an abortion with the so-called "Child Custody Protection Act" (CCPA). The bill would make it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion unless the parental involvement requirements of her home state had been met. If the bill were enacted, persons convicted would be subject to imprisonment, fines, and civil suits (H. R. 1755, 2003; S. 851, 2003).

This sounds like an assignment. The government laws expect a person to be of a certain age (generally 18) before they can get an abortion without their parents consent. Many people are frustrated by this because they think it's a an intrusion of their privacy and they are generally getting an abortion so their parents do not find out. But at the same time, finding the age that people can make well informed decisions and not make a drastic decision that they will regret is difficult. Some people are responsible little adults and younger ages such as 15 where others may not be able to make that kind of decision rationally until they are in the mid-twenties. The only real problem with the abortion law, is that desperate teenagers then seek other forms of abortion, some trying to do it to themselves, some finding others who do not have the legal power to do this abortions and this often causes complications to the person, even death. It's a tough subject because I agree whole heartedly that a person under 18 shouldn't be making this decision on their own, but I also know some are so desperate that they get an abortion by any means necisarry.

I think the parents should be notified if their child is pregnant. It's not like they won't find out anyway. As a mother of two girls I would want to know. I would raise the baby myself. Yes I would be upset that they got pregnant and I hope that they would tell me. There are a lot of complications that are associated with any procedure and a parent has the right to help their children find the right doctor to do this procedure.

As for the parents finding out unless you go down to a run down building where it is very cheap the insurance would cover it. Then when mom or dad gets that bill they will know.

I also understand that there are children in abusive relationships with their family so going to them may not be the answer. To me that is a sad thing but it happens. The safety of that child I would recommend going to church or another family member who will help advise you. What ever a young pregnant teenager does I would highly recommend talking it over with someone before doing this.

I'm going to tell you from personal experience... when you are 15 and get pregnant you are technically an adult UNTIL you have the child, the moment that baby comes out of you your a minor again and your parents have to do things for you. If you want/need and abortion at 15 then you can get it without your parents as long as you not over 14 wks. then you can no longer have an abortion. But if your parents are forcing you to have an abortion they can't. they can't force you to do anything you don't want to do that might jeopardize you or your unborn child's life. I hope I help and best of luck.

Depends on your state laws. In Texas, you need parental consent, although they were trying to abolish that several years ago.

It is not federal law, meaning that you would have to check the laws of the state in which you reside to see if you need parental consent to have an abortion.

As a mother, I would want there to be parental consent, as I would want to know what my daughter is doing. I think that's one more law that keeps you from parenting your children the way that you see fit.

Check with your state laws. It varies from state to state.
