I use a NetGear SC-101 (i call it a toaster) which allows you to add it to wour wireless network and allow any computer you allow to get things off of it. They had it at bestbuy and you can add up to 2 hard drives into it with any capacity... currently i have one and it is 250 GB

for a good value external hard drive freecom are about the best,i got a 80gb ex hdd for £59 and its been a life saver
however there are some good usb enclosures avalible were you can use a internal hard drive and attach all the ide connectors and it basically turns a internal drive into a external drive but at a fraction of the price
i built a external drive, all i needed to buy was a usb to ide connector and i made a case out of a plastic box, made a few mods to it and plugged it in,,,recognized the drive ..job done
good luck

I have a Freecom FHD-2 Pro 80 Gb. It is great, because it draws power from the USB 2.0 port, so no brick to cart about, and the unit fits in a pocket, so very portable. I had one fail on me whilst still in warranty, and it was replaced with minimum fuss.
Whichever one you go for, make sure you back it up regularly.

I use Western Digital drives in a ME-320 Bytecc enclosure
In fact I leave the enclosure open, and use multiple drives by just replugging power and data cables.
